LGSL Update: COVID-19

LGSL Families,

The LGSL Board of Directors would like to thank all of you for your patience as we have dealt with the uncertainty surrounding the Spring softball season. With Governor Northam’s stay-at-home order that could possibly extend to mid-June, the Board does not see any viable option to playing a Spring season, even in a modified form. It is with deep disappointment that the LGSL Board has decided to cancel the 2020 Spring House League and Middle School softball seasons. We will begin refunding registration fees, minus a $20 administration fee, shortly for House League registrations. For Middle School players, uniforms were ordered and paid for prior to any field closures. Since Middle School registration fees had not yet been collected, we will be issuing each Middle School family an invoice for the uniform cost (around $50).

While we do not expect to be able to have any season play until the Fall, LGSL will continue to explore possible opportunities to provide softball experiences to our players once the fields open for use. In the meantime, as the weather is getting nicer, we encourage all of our players to grab mom, dad or a brother or sister, a glove and a softball and go outside and work on some softball skills.  Mom and Dad can find videos and drills on the LGSL website under the Coach’s Corner tab on the left-hand side of the page. For our players age 12-18, the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is offering their online course Becoming a Triple-Impact Competitor (PCA FREE Online Course) FREE through April 30th.

Cancelling the season was a difficult decision to make, but the health and safety of our players, families and community is more important than a game. We hope everyone stays safe and if you have any questions, please email .

On Behalf of the LGSL Board,

Kim Hardman, President

The LGSL Board hopes that everyone is finding ways to stay busy and stay safe.

Yesterday, LGSL received the following from the Town of Leesburg:

At this time The Town of Leesburg will be closing all athletic fields, courts and playgrounds until further notice. This action mirrors steps that were taken by Loudoun County. It is not certain when the athletic fields will open back up for league usage but I will provided an update as soon as possible when more information is available.

And today Loudoun County PRCS sent out this statement:

At this time, all LCPS and PRCS athletic facilities remain closed and will do so until further notice. As far as a potential reopen date we have no date when the fields will reopen. We will contact our leagues and users when the situation changes and we have additional information to share. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this unprecedented situation.

In addition to the Town of Leesburg and PRCS, LGSL is working closely with the Loudoun County Softball Alliance to develop contingency plans for the Spring 2020 softball season. These plans include the possibility of a modified shortened season, the delay of the season past June, and cancellation.  The LGSL Board would like to thank all LGSL families for their patience. With everything still fluid at this time, we will continue to update our members as the next steps are determined.

Thank you,

LGSL Board of Directors

LGSL has received the following from Loudoun County Parks and Rec (PRCS):

County Admin has closed all park sites to organized use until March 30th. Team practices, games, scrimmages and tournaments are not allowed on any PRCS park site. All school sites remain closed as well.

All parks remain open but we are asking that users practice social distancing and all other precautions as recommended by the CDC and VA Dept. of Health.

LGSL requests that all members follow the field closures. Any unauthorized field use can result in the loss of fields available to LGSL when PRCS allocates fields each season.

Thank you for your patience and continued cooperation.

LGSL Board

LGSL Families,

I am writing to you today with an update on how the LGSL Board will be dealing with the effects COVID-19 is having regarding the upcoming Spring softball season. As always, the health and safety of all of our members is our top priority, and while we do not want to be alarmist while dealing with issues regarding COVID-19, we believe it is prudent to have the conversations and take the actions necessary to safeguard the members of the LGSL community and beyond.

As of today, because of the current school closures, practices that were scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 14th are suspended until further notice. As this is a situation that can change from moment to moment, we are working closely with Loudoun County Parks and Rec (PRCS) regarding field status and will keep everyone informed as we receive more information.

LGSL is part of the Loudoun County Softball Alliance which encompasses LGSL, Western Loudoun Girls Softball League, Ashburn Girls Softball League, Lower Loudoun Girls Softball League and Herndon/Reston Youth Softball. All Alliance members have been in contact and we are making contingency plans should we not be able to start the Spring Season on March 28th.

The LGSL Board will be meeting this weekend to further discuss and plan for disruptions to the Spring Season. We will keep updated information regarding COVID-19’s impact on Spring Softball on the LGSL home page, www.leesburggirlssoftball.org.

The LGSL Board would like to thank all our members for their understanding and patience through this situation.
